Sharper Pick Values: 1.01 Now Reflects the Best Available Rookie, Not a Tier Average
announcement · methodology · trades
Pick values in dynasty trade calculators have always had a fundamental flaw: the early picks in a round get priced to a tier average rather than to the specific player most likely to be selected. A "2026 Early 1st" might be worth 9,000 in one class and 7,000 in another depending on who's available — but static tier estimates give you the same number either way.
We've changed how picks are valued for sources that don't publish per-slot numbers.
Rookie-Anchored Pick Values
For any pick whose source (KTC or MFA) doesn't provide a specific slot value, we now use a rookie-anchored fallback: we sort all current rookies by dynasty value and map each pick's overall position to the Nth-best rookie.
Concretely:
- 1.01 prices to the best-valued rookie
- 1.02 prices to the second-best rookie
- 1.03 prices to the third-best, and so on
This is more accurate because early picks in an elite class should reflect elite-rookie values, and early picks in a thin class should reflect that the best available isn't as valuable. The market already prices this way — now the calculator does too.
League-Size Aware
The mapping adjusts for league size. An 8-team league's 2.02 (the 10th overall pick) maps to the same rookie as a 10-team league's 1.10. The "how valuable is this pick" question is the same regardless of how the rounds are divided.
Season-Automatic
The logic derives the current season from available history data, so it will automatically work for 2027, 2028, and beyond without any code changes on our end.
When the Fallback Applies
DynastyProcess and FantasyCalc already publish per-slot pick values, so those sources are unchanged. The rookie-anchored fallback only kicks in when a source lacks per-slot data (KTC and MFA at present) and when rookie data is available. For future seasons where rookies aren't yet announced, the existing tier/early/mid/late fallback still applies.
