Cherry Picked: Prove Any NFL Player Is Better Than Any Other NFL Player

Not long ago I saw a screenshot going around Twitter comparing Jalen Hurts to Josh Allen. Big bold numbers, side-by-side headshots, very official looking. The stats they chose were the most cherry picked stats possible.

For that reason, I decided to build a tool that does exactly that, on purpose. It's called Cherry Picked, and it will prove that your favorite player is better than any other player, using nothing but real NFL stats.

Every number on that card is real, pulled live from ESPN and the nflverse open data project. Hurts really does lead Allen in Super Bowl rings, head-to-head wins, win percentage, and playoff rushing touchdowns per game. The card just declines to mention anything else.

One Flip Button, Two Winners

Here's the whole thesis of the tool: with enough stats to choose from, anyone beats anyone. So under every card there's a Flip button that regenerates the comparison for the other side.

Same two quarterbacks, same data sources, opposite conclusion. Allen takes the MVP count, career passing yards, playoff wins, and total touchdowns accounted for. Neither card is wrong. That is the point, and it's also why arguing with a stats graphic in your group chat is a losing game unless you brought your own.

Every Framing Is Legal

The engine doesn't just pick which stats to show. It picks how to show them. For every stat it considers career totals, per-game rates, recent windows like "since 2023," playoff-only versions, and any season range you pin, then keeps whichever framing flatters your side most. If your guy loses career rushing touchdowns but wins rushing touchdowns per game, the card quietly shows per game, with the fine print doing the confessing.

Season pinning is where it gets truly shameless. Borrowing the range picker idea from the sports-reference sites, you can give each side its own years:

That's prime Allen (2020–2022) against recent Hurts (2023–2025). Is that a fair comparison? Absolutely not. Is every number on it accurate? Completely.

The Honesty Features

Because we're a fantasy analytics site and lying makes us itchy, the dishonesty is instrumented:

• The Cherry-Pick-O-Meter scores every card from 2 to 99 based on how much digging was required. A low score means your argument barely needed help. A 99 means we mined the archives.
• Honesty mode reveals the stats the card hid: the ones your opponent wins in every framing we tried.
• A perfect 100 is reserved for the matchup where we find nothing at all. In a tool built to prove anyone beats anyone, it has never been needed. If you find one, screenshot it.

Where the Numbers Come From

Player and team stats come from ESPN's public data, including postseason splits. Records, head-to-head results, and situational win percentages are computed from the nflverse games dataset, which covers every NFL game since 1999. Accolades like rings and MVPs are counted through the 2024 season. Nothing is invented; the graphic's bottom line says it plainly: all stats real, the selection is the lie.
